Donation from OOG (Eye Research Society) to REPEAT study at Amsterdam UMC
1 september 2024
The board of the Amsterdam UMC Foundation, on the advice of the Advisory Council of OOG, has awarded a donation of € 315,562 to the REPEAT study, a groundbreaking research project on the impact of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and the effectiveness of gene therapy. This research, led by Prof. Dr. Camiel Boon, aims to test and improve the reliability of various eye examinations in patients with RP.
The REPEAT study is crucial to demonstrate whether a treatment truly works and will form the foundation for future research into treatments for RP. The study focuses on determining the test-retest variability of different types of eye examinations, including visual acuity measurements and microperimetry, which can detect a decline even before the patient notices it. Additionally, the experiences of patients with RP are assessed through the MRDQ questionnaire, which focuses on daily life situations.
The donation from OOG will be used to fund medical researcher Drs. Y. El Allali, who will work full-time on this research at Amsterdam UMC for four years. The study runs from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2028, and will have a significant global impact on the development of new treatments for RP.
